Training secrets revealed (Part 3)

Training Secrets Revealed (Part 3)

Method #3
Physical confinement by means of  fences and ropes.

Physical confinement by means of fences and ropes.
Confinement by fences is often used in conjunction with confinement by ropes.  By doing this, the human can use the strengths of both methods to conduct the horse's movements with more subtlety.

Humans who are considered masters of these three methods are ones who, through many hours of experience and developing the capacity to be extremely present, can anticipate and direct the movements of a horse with very light pressure because they can feel and anticipate the horse’s moves and refine them before they become strong enough to need pain to change.  The feeling is that of being guided by a dance partner.

Of course when the horse doesn't agree with the master or understand what he wants, the master will quickly remind the horse with a dose of stronger discomfort or pain that she must continue to follow his lead.  In the case of a horse who has been trained to go bridleless in these methods, if she begins to disobey the rider’s requests, she will typically be returned to work with confinement of the head so the human can once more exert enough discomfort or pain to remind her of the desired response to the lighter leg or seat cue.

A horse displays what is often called “naughtiness” or going against the aids when bodily pains, mental confusion, or fear of something in her surroundings are judged by the horse to be more of a threat than the pain of the human’s ropes.

Some feel that riding the horse with the lightest use of the bridle, bits, spurs and other traditional equipment represents the highest levels of mastery in equine sports.  Others feel that displays featuring riding with no devices other than the human body represents the closest relationship between human and horse.

In the comments section today please post links to videos that show the use of this method of training.  Also, if you have questions, experiences to tell or different observations please write them down and post them as comments.  By speaking out as well as listening to each other, we will add to the level of compassion and understanding in the world today.

Tomorrow we will post part 4: No physical confinement.
